Smoke Detector Disposal - My recommendation would be to consult 10 CFR 30.20 and 10 CFR 32.26 first. Then, depending on state/local regulations, the rule of thumb for smoke detector disposal usually is if a smoke detector is less than 1 uCi Am-241, it is allowable to dispose of up to 10 in the trash per trash cycle, and if it is greater than 1 uCi Am-241, then it would be wise to send them either back to the manufacturer for disposal or if you have a lot of them, send them to a reputable company like Energy Solutions for disposal. Contact Donnie Brackett (865-220-1526) at Energy Solutions for this option.
